First printing. 12mo (17.5cm); blue publisher's cloth w/ tipped-on color illust., stamped in gilt on spine, in color pictorial dustwrapper; 31pp. Minor soiling and dampstains to boards and interior; mild handling wear; toning to dustwrapper extremities and spine, chipping at crown/heel of spine, short tear near front top leading corner. Very Good. Famed journalist and critic H.L. Mencken originally wrote this humorous holiday tale for The New Yorker in 1944, in which a philanthropist, outraged at the humiliating treatment endured by the city's poor (especially at the hands of missions like the Salvation Army), attempts to throw a bash for the bums of Baltimore that breaks the mold... With color illustrated pastedowns and b/w text-illustrations throughout.
