About This Item

Tokyo: Kazumasa Ogawa, 1892. First Edition. Bound in stiff decorated wraps with stabbed binding using silk ties. Good+. Kazumasa Ogawa. Folio. Pp. [14]. Featuring 13 black and white photos with captions, one per plate, and one colored photograph, each plate with a tissue guard. Wear and soiling commensurate with age, most notably on the top left corner of the front cover. With corners rounded and slight edge chipping. The rear cover has slight damage visible at a lower corner (please see photo). With an errata sheet bound in. This is a large folio volume in an Ogawa series published with uniform covers. While other titles appear on the open market, "Chrysanthemums of Japan" is scarce; auction records indicate only one sale in the last few years, in England. The publication provides a fascinating glimpse into Meiji-era Japan in which the traditional Japanese aesthetic is slightly Americanized. That tendency is most noticed in Ogawa's captions, imbued with Victoriana.
