About This Item
1933. Hardcover. Very good condition. This is a binder with an extensive photographic archive of Albert C. Marble's glass cup plates collection, along with a 14pp brochure, a 3pp "Index of Marbles' Cup Plate Numbers" and 2pp typescript.
Albert C. Marble was a businessman from Worcester, Massachusetts (Curtis & Marble Company) and was one of the foremost glass cup plate collectors in America. Early in his career as a collector, Marble photographed and numbered his plates in order of acquisition. (research dot frick dot org)
The ring binder has 79 numbered pages with 158 photos of 853 plates. Each page has 2 b&w photos taped with roughly 5-6 plates in each photograph, stamped on the verso "From Albert C. Marble, 8 Berwick St. Worcester, Mass." Each plate is numbered and referenced. Included is an Index of Marbles' Cup Plate Numbers - 3 printed sheets with cup plate numbers ranging from 1 to 900, "This List gives the plate and sheet numbers on my new set of photos. The plate numbers have NOT been changed but the sheet numbers have from the older photos."' Hand written additions from plate no. 808 to 856 (857-900 blank). Also included is 14pp printed booklet, "In response to many requests and inquiries about cup plates, I have endeavored to make a list of the Historical cup plates with which I am familiar... I have divided the Historical plates in the following groups: Portrait, Cabin, Monuments, Boats, Eagles and Miscellaneous." Also, 2 typewritten sheets summarizing the votes for Historical and Conventional plates, and identifying the names of those on the Jury. A manuscript list attached to page 75 gives estimates of plate values for some of the 160 plates listed. The Winterthur Library has photographs of Marble's collection in their archives. OCLC 41799448 cites something similar at two libraries but unclear, at the Worcester and Spokane Public Libraries.
