COLLECTION DES MEMOIRES RELATIFS A LA REVOLUTION FRANCAISE

99 octavos in 1/4 red morocco. There are 54 complete works represented across the 99 volumes, many in multi-volume sets. VG-: the volumes are generally in very good condition. There is some minor rubbing and chipping of the leather on the spines. Boards show edge wear, and there are occasional spots where the paper boards are rubbed. The leather remains strong on the joints throughout the set; bindings are uniformly strong and all boards firmly attached. Text blocks are moderately dust-stained along top edges, otherwise clean, square, and tight throughout the set. The majority of the volumes appear from the generally firm bindings to have never been opened. There is moderate scattered foxing, otherwise the texts remain clean throughout. Bookplates of previous owner, noted historian and author of historical fiction Samuel Shellabarger, are on the front pastedowns.

The individual works in this collection were published separately over the course of more than a decade. Multiple publishers are represented and publication dates range from 1821-1830. Works from this collection are scarce in general. Smaller incomplete sets are rare. A set of this many volumes together bound in uniform leather is truly one of a kind.

In his essay "Memoirs of Men of State," historian Pierre Nora describes the genesis of the collection:

"The Baudouin brothers, former printers for the Constituent Assembly, directed a progressive lawyer Berville, along with his friend Barriere, to collect the memoirs of the French revolutionaries, 'which the new generation was eager to know better,' as the promotional flyer explained. Although the original plans only envisaged twelve volumes, fifty-three volumes comprised the collection in 1827." ( in Rethinking France: Les Lieux de mémoire, p. 404). This set is presumably complete with 54 works including the introduction, as follows:
