About This Item
304 pages. Unopened except from the first and last eight pages. Spanish text clean and unmarked. Very good condition.
The French historian Count Roselly de Lorgues used the example of Columbus to critique Spain and its colonial practices, whilst also emphasising Spain's poor treatment of Columbus. He was one of the writers associated with creating the so-called "Columbian Legend" or 'Spain's disgrace'. Cesáreo Fernández Duro (1830–1908) was a Spanish naval officer and leading Columbus scholar of his time who, whilst noting some of the less flattering aspects of Columbus's actions, sought to show that Spain had fully expressed its gratitude to Columbus during his lifetime, contrary to de Lorgues' assertions. For Duro, and other Spanish intellectuals who adopted a common standpoint, Columbus was a heroic if flawed figure but one rightly finding his place firmly in Spain's historical and imperial legacy. With over 80 pages of notes to support the main text, this work represents a scholarly attempt to dismantle Roselly de Lorgues's narrative and evidence.
