The Communist Party of France Manifesto [translated into English].: POLLITT, Harry (introduction)

Paper wrapper a little soiled and age-toned. Creased vertically most likely from the pamphlet having been folded to fit into a jacket pocket. One section highlighted by an ink line in the margin otherwise text clean.

The, mostly blank, final page has 29 lines of neatly written text in ink in small script. The text begins "We the clothing workers of Leeds…." [i.e. Leeds in England], and continues with an analysis of the position of clothing workers and sets out a series of demands/aspirations including the claim for "equal pay for equal work" – highly relevant due to the increased number of women employed in the industry on work previously done by men now in the armed forces. The hand-written text could have been the basis for part of a speech given by a labour leader or for the text of a trade union meeting resolution.

An important text given the role of the French Communist Party in organising resistance to the occupying Nazi forces, and the Party's growing prestige prior to the liberation of France. Also includes an article by Waldeck Rochet, then a French Communist Deputy, with perspectives on the general situation in France. Rochet was later General Secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF) from 1964 to 1972.
