About This Item

Chicago: Charles T. Powner Co., 176 Plymouth Court; [Buchanan Company, Ltd., 7522 Sheridan Rd, 1934. Small octavo in wrappers, stapled (17 x 12 cm.), 128 pages. Index. FIRST EDITION THUS. An enlarged and re-titled edition of a Pre-Prohibition bar manual, Tom & Jerry's Bartender's Guide, How to Mix Drinks, now published at the onset of Repeal. The book was published under variations of this title, often with a variant title on the wrapper and with an additional company name. Of the examples we've seen, the second company is a distributor or retailer of spirits, and so the book is being used with multiple covers as a promotional device. The foreword refers to the 1933 Madrid conference of barmen, and state that many "formulae have been gathered from Cuban and European sources, and have been picked up from night clubs and private parties in America. Internally a bit age-toned, but clean and sound. In publisher's blue wrappers, titled in black. A waterstain to lower left corner, sticker adhesion mark, and soiling to wrappers, otherwise very good. Scarce. [OCLC locates copies of various printings from 1934 to 1968].
