About This Item
Boston, US: Osgood, Ticknor Fields, 1876. Later Printing . Hardcover. Very Good-/No Jacket. A lovely old hard cover with rich stamping, blind, gilt and black, on both spine and front cover. Trace abrasion wear to head/foot of spines, beveled boards with the odd tiny scar. Text is lightly age darkened, handsome dark green pastedowns and endsheets. Front endsheet rather foxed, frontispice is portrait of Whittier with tissue guard in place. Laid in the book was a gorgeous silk bookmark. Also a news clipping by daughter of Mary Quantrille claiming her mother was the model for Frietschie of the poem. The clipping is very age darkened, undated, though on it's back, seems to discuss the settlement of the Franco-Prussian war. both will accompany the book.
