London, 1823. Hard Cover. (London: Taylor and Hessey 1823). SECOND EDITION in book form. iv, 206 pages + 6pp publisher's adverts at the end. 12mo. Recent hand-crafted rebind in half calf with raised bands and tooling to the spine in gold leaf. Hand-marbled paper boards. The end-papers have been replaced with period hand-made paper. An exquisite fine binding (with the binding signed). A lovely production. An autobiographical account of the author's laudanum addiction and its affect on his life. The Confessions was "the first major work De Quincey published and the one which won him fame almost overnight". A name on the title page otherwise a VG copy with a clean text block. Photographs/scans available upon request.

Synopsis

Confessions of an English Opium-eater is an autobiographical account written by Thomas de Quincey about his addiction to laudanum - a combination of opium and alcohol - and its effects. He first had it published anonymously in the London Magazine in 1821, but it was released as a book the following year.
