London: John Lane The Bodley Head LTD. (1930), 1930. First edition thus. Hardcover. Near Fine/very near Fine. 8vo. [3], v-xix, [4], 4-304 pp. Green cloth with gold lettering and decorations on the front board and spine. Price of 21/- net on the spine panel of the dust jacket. Illustrated with decorative endpapers and pastedowns, a frontispiece, and eleven additional plates all done by Sonia Woolf. The true first edition was published in 1822, with subsequent editions in 1823 and 1856. Hailed as a monumental and early drug memoir, De Quincey details his addiction to laudanum (opium mixed with alcohol) and the visions he saw while taking the drug. A beautiful copy of the Bodley Head edition, with captivating drawings by Ms. Woolf. A Near Fine book with the green topstain faded away, dust jacket is very near Fine with just a bit of edge wear.

Synopsis

Confessions of an English Opium-eater is an autobiographical account written by Thomas de Quincey about his addiction to laudanum - a combination of opium and alcohol - and its effects. He first had it published anonymously in the London Magazine in 1821, but it was released as a book the following year.
