London: Printed for Taylor and Hessey, 1822. First Edition. Hardcover. First edition. (First printing in book form. Follows its appearance in The London magazine). vi, 206 pp. including half-title. No ads, likely as issued. Bound in the original boards with later title label, since effaced. Very Good+, boards well-worn with exposed tips, binding may have had some work done to it over the years. Contents bright; tiny ink squiggle on paste down, otherwise unmarked. A very nice copy.

The author's first book-- an immediate sensation-- published anonymously when he was only 36. The very first drug memoir. Rare in the original boards.

Synopsis

Confessions of an English Opium-eater is an autobiographical account written by Thomas de Quincey about his addiction to laudanum - a combination of opium and alcohol - and its effects. He first had it published anonymously in the London Magazine in 1821, but it was released as a book the following year.
