About This Item

Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1954. Soft cover. Very Good-. Hearings before the Subcommittee on Research and Development of the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy, Congress of the United States, Eighty-Third Congress, Second Session." 194 pp. incl. index. Though Ford is not one of the authors, his signature on the cover is explained by the 1-page typed letter, also included. It is on his personal stationery which reads at the top: "Gerald R. Ford, Jr., Fifth District, Michigan, Member of Committee on Appropriations, Congress of the United States, House of Representatives, Washington, D.C.". It is dated September 13, 1954 and is addressed to Ralph L. Fitts, M.D. of Grand Rapids, Michigan. It reads in part: "Because this subject is of such vital interest and importance, I thought you might like to have the enclosed copy of the hearings, "The Contribution of Atomic Energy to Medicine". With kind personal regards and very best wishes. Sincerely, [signature] Gerald R. Ford, Jr. m.c.". The letter is SIGNED "Jerry Ford"; the signature on the book is Gerald R. Ford, Jr. (The Jr. disappeared from most of his signatures as President). Apparently this was his personal copy of the book which he passed on to a friend. Its condition is vg-; There are fingerprints on the covers (not touching the signature), and the spine is loosening and torn at the bottom. The letter was hinged into the book with tape which yellowed; its stains appear on both the title page and the letter. Ford served a very long time in the House, beginning in 1949.
