Paris: Chez Barrois, quai des Augustins, a` la Ville de Nevers, 1748. 1st Edition. A Very Good Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket.
Rebound in late 19th century in quarter blue cloth with stamped spine titles in gilt to blue marbles boards. The bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate shelf handling wear with edges and corners rubbed. Text in French. . Printed on laid-paper. 8vo; 17cm (8inches) tall; viii, 53, [3] pages; 17 cm (8vo). Woodcut title vignette, head-pieces, tail-pieces, initials. Errata: page [1] at end. Includes bibliographical references.
Publisher: Barrois, Jacques-Marie (1704-1769)
Printer: Bullot, Joseph (1686?-1770)
Located in only three institutions: Harvard, Princeton, and the Eastman School of Music (and perhaps BIBLIOTHEQUE NATIONALE DE FRANCE) [OCLC 41048384]. Background Information:
After studying law at the University of Caen, Henri Richer was received as a lawyer at the Parliament of Rouen. But, primarily interested in literature, he soon quit the bar and came to Paris to try and succeed as a poet.
He began with verse translations of Virgil's Eclogues and Ovid's first eight Heroes and gave two books of fables, often reissued and which are the best part of his work: the style is simple, sometimes prosaic, but the very mediocre invention and its narration is cold. It was through this that he acquired, and kept, a relative notoriety. Henri Richer is in fact reputed to have written poems in the same style as Jean de la Fontaine1.
He also composed tragedies, the first of which, Sabinus et Éponine (1735), had seven performances at the Comédie-Française and was translated into Dutch and performed successfully in Amsterdam. He is also the author of a Vie de Mécénas, with historical and critical notes (1746).
Gérard Laudin considers that 'Henri Richer is one of the best fabulists of the 18th century'. [wiki, FR]

Description:
The Spectator was a two or three page paper written by Addison and Steele that was published from 1711-1712 in London, England. Eight bound volumes of The Spectator were published in later runs, each volume containing about 200 daily editions.Boards are rubbed, scuffed and soiled and most of the gilt spine titles and red band backgrounds have faded. Corners are bumped. Volume two's rear board and volume eight's front board have seperated from the spine but have a very clean break and could be reattached with some basic rebinding. Raised spine ribs. Endpapers and title pages show minor browning with age, but all other pages are clean and bright for their age. Indexes at the rear of the texts.
All proceeds benefit The Friends of the San Anselmo Library. No expedited shipping on this set. Extra charges for sending the set will be added to the order after shipping to match the actual cost of mailing.
