Hamaguchi Takashi became a photographer after working for a photographic supplier on leaving school and briefly owning a camera shop in Yokohama. He chose to work as a freelance to overcome issues of objectivity and engage more deeply with his chosen subjects. His primary focus was the socio-economic struggles of postwar Japan, and in the 1960s and '70s, he photographed many of the protests around the country. This book features his photographs of many of the protests by students at universities throughout Japan in the 1960s. These include those that took place on campus and at Haneda Airport, the US Army Hospital at Camp Oji, against the docking of US submarines and aircraft carriers at Yokohara and Sasebo, the rally in Hibiya Park, Anti-War Day in Shinjuku, and the protests opposed to the building of Narita International Airport. ANPO refers to the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan, renewed in 1970.
