Hermitage, 1948. first. hardcover. very good: binding tight, front pastedown and FFEP covered in pencil and pen annotations, main text has a few pencil markings next to some recipes. offsetting on back endpapers from newspaper bookmark, some toning, bottom corners slightly bumped./poor: large rips along front cover and spine, chipping, missing pieces, price still visible on inside flap ($3.00). first edition first printing of an important historical cookbook by the cooking editor of Ebony Magazine (later reprinted as The Ebony Cookbook in 1962). From the preface: "There has long been a need for a non-regional cook book that would contain recipes, menus, and cooking hints from and by Negroes all over America. I have attempted in these pages to present, along with my own contributions, as complete a collection as can be found anywhere in the land. Recipes new and fresh in the modern manner...recipes ages old brought back to life...original, traditional, and exciting."
With a glossary of cooking terms, advice for the housewife, brief biographies of some of the people from whom the recipes were collected, etc.
