About This Item

Edinburgh Bibliographical Society, Edinburgh, first edition, 1993. Illustrated laminated wrappers, 8vo, 25 cm,. 88, [2] pp, ills, facs. The 1801 sale catalogue of part of his library reproduced from the unique copy in New York Public Library with an introductory essay. From the blurb: "The library of David Steuart, Edinburgh banker and businessman, was described by a contemporary as 'the most uncommon, and certainly the most valuable private library ever brought to the hammer on this side the Tweed'. But few historians of the book know about Steuart. This facsimile of the only known copy of the 1801 sale catalogue, with an introduction about the man and his books by Brian Hillyard, is intended to restore Steuart to his rightful position in the history of book collecting. Booklabel of the bibliophile A R A Hobson on front inside wrapper. Laid in is a National Library of Scotland compliments slip bearing a manuscript note from Richard Ovenden requesting a review of the book by Hobson; the rest of the slip is covered with Hobson's ink notes for his review. Near Fine.
