About This Item

London: Macmillan and Co , 1892 . Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5.5". Hugh Thomson. An excellent copy of Hugh Thomson's third illustrated edition of The Spectator's series on this archetypal English gentleman. First published in this form in 1886, this is the third edition of this anonymously authored work - attributed to Joseph Addison - to be illustrated by Hugh Thomson.First appearing in 'The Spectator', this series follows the titular Sir Roger, an English squire of Queen Anne's reign who exemplifies the values of an old country gentleman, and was portrayed as lovable but somewhat ridiculous. He is said to be the grandson of the man who invented the dance of the same name. With a frontispiece and numerous illustrations from Irish illustrator Thomson, best known for his pen-and-ink illustrations of works by authors including Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and J. M. Barrie. Thomson inaugurated the 'Cranford School' of illustration with the publication of his 1891 Macmillan edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's 'Cranford'. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, lovely, with bumping to back strip head and tail. Front hinge starting, with board holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good
