Binding tight and solid. : "No sooner had the Nazis seized control of Germany in 1933 than they launched their relentless attacks on the avant-garde and their desecration of modernist art. By the fall of 1937 they had stripped 16,000 avant-garde works from the nation's museums and sent 650 to Munich for a massive exhibition, Entartete Kunst (degenerate art, as they called this work). Among the artists thus castigated were towering figures of the art world: Max Beckmann, Marc Chagall, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Oskar Kokoschka, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, and founders of German Expressionism: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Franz Marc, Emil Nolde, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Provocative installation techniques were employed, some even reminiscent of the famous avant-garde shows of the past. Stephanie Barron, curator of the twentieth century art at the museum, has assembled more than 150 surviving masterworks from the original show. Generously illustrated with many photos never before published this volume also contains biographical information on each artist pertinent to the Nazi persecution of the avant- garde." L'estampe Originale, founded in 1978 by Sandra Sofris Dolmatch, MFA, is a private art and antiquarian book dealer devoted to the research and selling of fine original prints, drawings, paintings, and sculpture- old master, nineteenth and twentieth century. It is a small company based on the traditional European model, that is to say with a medium sized and varied inventory embracing both major artists and minor, expensive and inexpensive. The list of writers, publishers and artists represented in our inventory is numerous, the techniques include a variety of drawings, etchings, engravings, aquatints, mezzotints, dry points, lithography, woodcuts, wood engravings, screen prints and a selection of mixed media. Although we are by nature generalists in the field, we have particular strengths in 19th and 20th century prints, paintings, and rare books. Sandra has been a member of ABAA, CINOA and ILAB since 1980. She numbers among her clients, private collectors, art dealers, libraries, foundations, as well as museums and rare book rooms in Europe, Asia, and Australia.
