Oktav, 19,5 x 16 cm (Vorderdeckel mit größerem Tintenfleck, leicht bestoßen, anfangs auch innen mit Tintenspuren im weißen Rand, papierbedingt lagenweise unterschiedlich gebräunt, nur wenig braunfleckig, im Ganzen: recht gut erhalten). Mit einem Besitzvermerk von alter Hand auf dem Titel, Stempel und Signatur auf vorderem Spiegel, Vorsätze vorne und hinten mit mathematischen Notizen von alter Hand in Bleistift, Seite 197/198 mit Einriss, Seiten 495 bis 508 mit dezenter Wurmspur im weißen Rand. Daniel Schwenter war Orientalist und Mathematiker, geb. am 31. Jan. 1585 in Nürnberg, seit 1626 Rektor der Universität Altdorf, gest. am 19. Januar 1636 in Altdorf. Schwenter studierte orientalische Sprachen und Mathematik an der Universität Altdorf, wo er Schüler des Mathematikers und Astronomen Johann Richter (Johannes Praetorius) war. "Seine zahlreichen Schriften gehören zum geringeren Theile der orientalischen Philologie, zum größeren Theile der Mathematik an; einiges fällt nun gar in ganz andere Gebiete. (...)" Die Erquickstunden "bilden eine Fundgrube geschichtlicher Notizen, welche einer systematischen Ausbeutung noch immer harrt. Den Mathematiker interessirt vornehmlich, daß hier die erste Anwendung von Kettenbrüchen in einem deutschen Werke vorkommt. Der Physiker wird einer Senkwage zur Bestimmung des specifischen Gewichtes von Flüssigkeiten, sowie einer Art von magnetischem Telegraphen seine Aufmerksamkeit zuwenden." Includes many exotic flowers and plants including the licuala, pandan, broad thatch and carludovica palm trees, blue bird of paradise flower, prickly pear, sarsaparilla, dragon tree, stapelia, Australian stinging tree and the voodoo lily, Amorphophallus eichleri. Seventeen-year-old Florence Nightingale Soden began this diary to mark her society debut and to document the expanded social and travel engagements available to her. The first entry on Sept 3, 1883 marks her seventeenth birthday and details Soden's extensive journey around Italy and France, far away from her home in Clapham, England.
Soden clearly reflects upon some of her entries after they are written and edits herself. She cut out three pages, another four have been completely removed from the diary, and one page is painted over black. Botanical specimens are tipped in as momentos. Her student days are remembered with a Class I exam paper on the history of Rome laid in at the back. (It may be that a Class I mark was the parental prerequisite for the reward of her travel abroad.)
