About This Item
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1973. First Printing [Stated]. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. 24 cm. xv, [1], 432 pages. Illustrations. Chronology. Notes on Sources and Bibliography. Index. DJ has slight edgewear. The author was a former editor at American Heritage and then an editor at Newsweek Books. He was a Woodrow Wilson fellow at the University of Wisconsin. A moving account of Roosevelt's post-presidential years and of his efforts to regain power after he left the White House. The author suggests that personal drives--a need for action and glory--motivated Roosevelt as much as his political beliefs did, and that his failure to achieve any of his goals after 1908 brought personal tragedy in its train. He left the White House at fifty at a time when he is young and energetic. He has second thoughts. Not to mention the fact that he vowed not to return to the White House but to stay occupied with his travels. He went on a Safari to Africa, visited Europe and South America but he is drawn more and more back to politics.
