November 1913 reprint. 8vo. 14 x 20cm, 1031pp (2), original green cloth with black blind stamped decoration and title in black to front board and gilt titles to the spine. Publisher's original dust jacket showing price of 3/6 to spine. The boards and spine are in near fine condition. There is very light rubbing to the extreme tips of the spine ends and a 3mm nick in the cloth on the bottom edge of the front board. The fore edge corners are all sharp, firm and square and the jacket has kept the cloth beautifully clean and fresh. The binding is very tight and square. Internally, there is acid migration toning and spotting to both free endpapers and two family inscriptions on the ffep., but thereafter, the pages are very clean throughout. The original dust jacket is complete other than loss to the spine ends and a chip in the middle of the spine, which is itself somewhat toned. The front panel and front flap are separate, there being a split down the length of the upper joint, and there is a closed tear across the centre of the spine adjacent to the chip. The jacket is now protected in a fully removable Brodart cover (shown in the final image). The front panel lists editions available from the 'Life and Works of Charles Darwin' and the back panel lists 'The Progressive Science Series'. A lovely condition book with a scarce original jacket. Synopsis
The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex is a book on evolutionary theory by English naturalist Charles Darwin, first published in 1871. It was Darwin's second great book on evolutionary theory, following his 1859 work, On The Origin of Species. In The Descent of Man, Darwin applies evolutionary theory to human evolution, and details his theory of sexual selection.
