Philadelphia, PA, Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, "1877" [1881]. Large 4to (33.1 x 25.5 cm). Drophead title; 74 pp. [numbered 263-336]; nine lithographed plates [numbered 35-43]. Later black buckram with gilt title on the spine. Original printed wrappers bound in. One of the last papers by the American palaeontologist William More Gabb (1839-1878). It contains descriptions of Mesozoic Peruvian faunas, largely consisting of gastropods, ammonites and bivalves, collected by the Italian-Peruvian geologist Antonio Raimundi (1826-1890). One plate shows bivalves and brachiopods, another shows echinoderms. Many species were new. Although dated 1877 on the front wrapper, publication was delayed until February 1881 (Groves and Squires, p. 130). Provenance: small stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the front wrapper. Wrapper edge with a short tear, and fore edge reinforced with Japanese paper, otherwise a very good copy, with fine, clean plates. Rare. Groves, L. T. and R. L. Squires (2018).
