London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1872. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Good. Octavos. 469, 522 pages. Hardcovers quarter bound in brown leather with green and tan marbled paper covered boards and red label pastedown on spine. EX-LIBRARY SET. The leather on the spines is a bit faded or sunned. Old evidence of labels removed from near the foot of each spine. The bindings are rubbed with some scuffing and bumping, and the hinges seem secure. The headcap at the spine of Volume Two has been nicely reinforced with leather. The rear hinge of Volume One is reinforced with Japanese tissue. Bookplates on the front paste downs with evidence of earlier and larger bookplates beneath those removed. The rear pastedown of Volume One has a pocket and a due date slip, and the rear pastedown of Volume Two shows where a similar pocket was removed. For all this, the text blocks are sound. The text is a bit toned but generally clean. There is a 3 inch diagonal tear to the fore edge of the leaf for pages 233-234. The bindings are actually fairly attractive on the shelf. Volume One covers 1801-1806. Volume Two covers 1806-1809 and has the Appendices.
