"Sanderson Miller (1716-80) was a gentleman architect, an amateur pioneer of significance in the development of the Gothic Revival during its delightful and inventive Georgian period. He is best known for the sham castles on his own estate at Radway in Warwickshire and at Wimpole and Hagley, but his work also included the design of the Great Hall at Lacock Abbey, the new Hagley Hall and the Shire Hall in Warwick. Through the evidence contained in the only two of his diaries to survive, this study explores the development of his architectural practice in the context of the lively demands of his social life and the pressing need to manage his own agricultural estate." -- DJ.
