About This Item
Tallahassee, F, 1966. 6,48pp. plus folding plan. Original printed yellow wrappers bound into modern three quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Fine. From an edition limited to 210 copies. A presentation copy, inscribed by N. Orwin Rush to the noted collector, C.R. Sanders, and with Sanders' bookplate on the rear pastedown. This is a facsimile reprint of an important document of the American Revolution in the South, being a description of the Spanish attack on Pensacola in 1781. In 1779, Spain joined France in aiding the Americans against the British in the Revolution; however, Spanish goals were mainly self-serving, and she particularly wished to regain Florida, lost to Britain in the Peace of 1763 which concluded the French and Indian War. With this in mind, the energetic Viceroy Bernardo de Galvez organized an expedition from Havana against the British base at Pensacola, the capital of the Province of West Florida (including the present Florida panhandle, southern Alabama and Mississippi, and Louisiana as far as the Mississippi River). The text is Galvez's account of the expedition, with historical context by N. Orwin Rush and a facsimile of a Spanish manuscript map of the engagement. 1781 edition: SABIN 26475. PALAU 96980. STREETER SALE 1191. HOWES P59, "b." SERVIES 567
