Thick 8vo, leather, title printed in red and black, title and preliminaries with some woodcut illumination, 2110 columns. Top cover detached, rear hinge weak, binding with considerable wear and chips, , front free endpaper missing part of upper portion, loose leaf (2 pp.) of catalogue of the names inserted in front, considerable chips tears and browning, unclear if it belongs to this book, page number inconsistent with other pages, which are not missing, rear leaf bound upside down, again, unclear if this belongs to this book, library label on front pastedown, signature on front free endpaper, title soiled and aged, balance of contents in pretty good condition, but there is some foxing and staining. Could use rebinding. Charles Estienne (1504-1564), also known as Carolo Stephano, which is the name on the title page, was a physician, printer and writer. This was one of his most important works, and it appears to have been first published in 1553, but would follow with many other editions over the next century.
