About This Item
Munich: Kurt Wolff Verlag, 1924. Very Good. Munich: Kurt Wolff Verlag, 1924. First Edition. Quarto; xi + 186pp, including List of Plates and errata. Twelve full-page B&W plates in collotype; a few smaller diagrams, details, and floorplans in line drawings embedded in text. Black cloth with gilt lettering in Fraktur on spine and front panel. Tissue guards printed with captions in place for all twelve collotype plates. Entirely in German.
This text volume was originally accompanied by a volume of plates, now lacking.
Some narrow white scuff marks on panel surfaces and spine. Signs of water on rear panel near foot of spine, but no seepage into hinge or textblock. Joints and hinges very robust. Textblock unmarred and unmarked though a few foxing speckles present on textblock fore-edge.
Panofsky's celebrated treatise is published here with superb, high-contrast B&W photographs (with highly saturated blacks) of major sculptural pieces from Ferrara, Arles, Chartres, Reims, Metz, and Amiens as well as model pieces from Germany. All of them photographed before World War II and a century of subsequent pollution would have their way with them.
