About This Item
Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts: Massachusetts Arms Company, 1854. Directions for Using Greene's Carbine
Printed on thin single sided stock with floral scroll border. Measures 5.5 x 8.5 inches. 1/2 tear at top edge otherwise very clean. Very Good Condition.
Broadside printed for the Massachusetts Arms Company, Chicopee Falls, Mass., T. W. Carter, Agt.', giving brief instructions on how to load, detach the barrel, prime the arm and detach the lock of the Greene Carbine.
James Greene patented his breechloading carbine design in 1854 and arranged to have it manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls. Greene signed a contract with the United States Government selling 300 of them to the US military. Field tests found the guns awkward to use, which perhaps is why this little instruction sheet was printed. Online sources claim the 6th Ohio Cavalry was one of the few units to employ these guns. A larger order was placed by the British Government.
Several of these broadsides have shown up on the market in the past 20 years (none today) but we find no holdings in institutions as of November 2023.
