Fine/Fine. 8vo, black cloth with stylized gold spine lettering over red boards, Mylar-protected dust jacket (unclipped) on parchment-paper with an elaborately illuminated "Doctor Mirabilis," 335 pages + [1] Colophon. SCARCE first volume (though actually published second) of the 13th century historical novelistic trilogy "After Such Knowledge" about Friar Roger Bacon and his pathfinding "scientific" discoveries, which were often interpreted as sorcery by his contemporaries. The first English edition was published by Faber & Faber in 1969. This First US edition was published in 1971 with textual changes. Anatomy of Wonder (1987) 3-42. Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 569-73. A couple of ink notes on the inside rear flap, else Fine internally and externally.
