About This Item

London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1970. 1st English. h/b. Very good, clipped d/j (in protective sleeve, some chipping on edges); blue cloth boards (some staining), gilt spine titling bright; text block firm; pages crisp, with maps and bw plates. V light foxing on edges. Signed and inscribed to Tony Attard on tipped in card.. 8vo: royal (250 x 170 / 10"" x 6_""). In May 1940, Group Captain Peter Townsend took command of 85 Squadron, tasked with preparing it for the defence of Great Britain against German bombers. It was the beginning of the long, hot, lethal summer in which the RAF and the Luftwaffe fought to the death over England in the furious conflict which ultimately saved Britain from Nazi invasion. Peter Townsend's epic DUEL OF EAGLES is widely acknowledged as the classic account of the Battle of Britain - the desperate, defining clash which would become one of the greatest triumphs in British military history. ÔIf I were going to choose a single book to cover the Battle of Britain in a comprehensive manner I would choose DUEL OF EAGLESÕ Daily Telegraph. Townsend, of course, attained notoriety for having been divorced and thus forbidden from marrying Princess Margaret.

On Mar 24 2011, Patrick1952 said:
Peter Townsend provides excellent background describing the development of fighter and bomber technology and warfare theory during and after WW1 of the British RAF and the German Luftwaffe, leading up to the Battle of Britain. A very personal and compassionate rendering of the tragic conflict between Germany and England.
