About This Item
New York: Appleton-Century, 1935. Later printing. From the estate of Eleanor Roosevelt with her bookplate. Stamped on the half-title “From The Collection of Eleanor Roosevelt. John A. Roosevelt” which is signed “John A. Roosevelt”. Affixed to the front pastedown is a small 3/4” round sticker printed “Estate of Eleanor Roosevelt, Hyde Park, N.Y.” with #1705 written in ink. Also affixed to the front pastedown is a small (2 3/8” x 3”) sepia-toned photograph of two dogs in an outdoor setting beneath which is written in ink in an unknown hand “Happy Birthday 1938 from the Snowdens.” The front free endpaper has been neatly excised from the book. Affixed to the rear pastedown is a charming illustration of a dog lying on a sofa, possibly a clipping from a magazine, (3 1/2” x 4 1/2”) with the caption“The Greatest Dog Story”. Near fine copy with the gilt-stamping on the front board only very slightly rubbed and with the gilt-stamping on the spine only slightly more so, with “1705 ER” hand written in white at the bottom of the spine in a custom 3/4 leather gilt stamped slipcase with raised bands. Wtih a foreword by author Rex Beach. The wonderful story of a champion hunting dog and beloved family member named Dumb-Bell.
