About This Item
New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1912. First Edition. Octavo. Portrait frontispiece, xii, 312 pages, index and with 17 other Illustrations. Besides being a naval officer and military general, he became the superintendent of Indian affairs. He was a friend of Kit Carson, Buffalo Bill Cody, and U.S Grant. He achieved national fame in 1848 in carrying to the east the first gold samples from California, contributing to the gold rush. In his lifetime, Beale saw San Francisco grow from an isolated village of five houses of a city of 300,000 residents. He joined Stephen F. Kearny's column before the Battle of San Pasqual on December 6, 1846. When surround by the Mexican army Beale, Kit Carson, and a Delaware servant crept through the Mexican lines to San Diego for reinforcements. A scarce book and a classic in the rise of the West. Bound in dark blue cloth, spine lettering gilt, a few nicks to spine ends, lower corners bumped, some off-setting to endpapers from most likely old news clippings, previous owner's inscription "Judge O.B. Dickinson from (?) Beale, Sept. 1918" Possibly a relative of Beale. A very good copy.
