Translaton f]rom Neruda's introduction: "The poems collected in this book were part of a cycle of my production developed nearly ten years ago. The influence they show of the great Uruguayan poet Carlos Sabat Ercasty and his general accent of eloquence and verbal arrogance made me remove the vast majority of them from publicity. Now, after the period in which the publication of "El Hondero Entusiasta" would have hurt me intimately, I have delivered them to this publisher, as a document, valid for those who are interested in my poetry..." Neruda. January 1933.
Pablo Neruda (Ricardo Eliecer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto).
