Elector Certificate and Oath.: Reconstruction Oath

by M. St. Johns; Seaborn Jones

  • Used

[Texas] [Reconstruction] M. St. Johns, Register. Elector Certificate and Oath. New Orleans: Peter O'Donnell, Stationer [1867]. Partially printed form with manuscript insertions. One sheet 22.5 x 28 cm printed on both sides. Has been folded. Some chips and small splits to one edge. Very good.

OCLC shows two holdings for similar forms in Louisiana (Tulane [2]). A Reconstruction Era form for elections in the former Confederated States. St. Johns certified that , a resident of Carthage, Panola County, Texas was registered as a qualified elector of the Panola County. On the back was an oath, signed by Jones, who declared that he had "not been disenfranchised for participating in any rebellion or civil war against the United States" never participated in "insurrection and rebellion against the United States" nor "held any executive of judicial office in any State and afterwards engages in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, and given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof" and will "support the Constitution and obey the laws of the United States." An interesting and unusual reminder of the post-Civil War era in the South.

Annapolis, MD: State of Maryland, Executive Department, 1863. Paperback. Self-cover. 8vo. 4pp. Very good. Minor binding traces. Clean and bright, with an attractive Maryland state seal at upper left of the first page. This November 2nd proclamation "To the Citizens of the State and more especially the Judges of Election" indignantly protests a military order stating that "evil disposed persons" found in Maryland and tolerated by state officials would be attempting to disrupt elections and authorized military personnel and provost marshals to arrest persons loitering about polling places. The text of General Schenck's October 27th General Order No. 53 giving this direction is included, as is Lincoln's directive revoking the offensive portion of Schenck's order. Uncommon.

New York: A.C. Armstrong and Sons, 1889 Later edition. The first edition was published in a two-volume set in Edinburgh in 1881. The title-page of the present item states that it is the second edition, though it seems that several earlier single-volume editions, published in both New York and Edinburgh, are stated on their title-pages to be the second edition.. Publisher's blue-green cloth stamped in black with image of a "cannibal fork" on both coveres. Octavo. With four plates from the author's own illustrations of Fiji and a fold-out map (11" by 7 "). Very minor rubbing to extremities. Blue-green endpapers. A bright, attractive, near-fine copy, uncommon in this condition, of this account of British life in the first years of the Colony of Fiji. Constance Frederica Gordon Cumming (1837 – 1924) was a skilled landscape painter and author of over two dozen travel books. Los Angeles: [Printed by Will Cheney at the Press in the Gatehouse,] 1964 First edition. Based on Cheney's usual limitations for similar items, he probably printed around 100 or 150 copies. He printed a second edition in 1968 (Los Angeles Typesticker, 71). The note included in the present item has been written on the blank verso of a stray page (24) from another copy of A Treatise on Pocket Knives; however, the page is printed on a different paper stock than the present item and, in addition, the verso of page 24 in the present item is printed with text. Thus, the note may be written on a proof page.. Original orange-brown printed stiff paper wrappers lettered in black. Sewn with tan cord. Fore-edge untrimmed. With an unsigned note laid in: "This one sewn on cords. Only one in the lot so sewn," in contrast to the white thread used to sew other copies. 3 x 4.
