Elector Certificate and Oath.: Reconstruction Oath

by M. St. Johns; Seaborn Jones

  • Used

[Texas] [Reconstruction] M. St. Johns, Register. Elector Certificate and Oath. New Orleans: Peter O'Donnell, Stationer [1867]. Partially printed form with manuscript insertions. One sheet 22.5 x 28 cm printed on both sides. Has been folded. Some chips and small splits to one edge. Very good.

OCLC shows two holdings for similar forms in Louisiana (Tulane [2]). A Reconstruction Era form for elections in the former Confederated States. St. Johns certified that , a resident of Carthage, Panola County, Texas was registered as a qualified elector of the Panola County. On the back was an oath, signed by Jones, who declared that he had "not been disenfranchised for participating in any rebellion or civil war against the United States" never participated in "insurrection and rebellion against the United States" nor "held any executive of judicial office in any State and afterwards engages in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, and given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof" and will "support the Constitution and obey the laws of the United States." An interesting and unusual reminder of the post-Civil War era in the South.
