About This Item

Carey & Hart, [1841]. Acceptable. 0x0x0. First ed. but not bound in calf as pictured and not signed by author or anyone else; the black cloth boards have identical bright gilt stamped ornamentation and in small lettering at base of front board is printed: "S. Moore, Binder, Philadelphia." These boards are quite scuffed and bumped and spine panel is peeling with small portion at base missing; gilt edges are dulled. 322 p., clean and unmarked except for "No.182" written in calligraphic hand at upper margin of paste-down; includes at back 6 p. of "Valuable Books Recently Published by Carey & Hart, Philadelphia;" followed by 6 blank pages that have large stains at lower corner, followed by 2 end pages that are clean. As this book begs for rebinding (the front gutter is cracked as well) these pages could be replaced. Includes 8 beautiful full-page engravings, some with tissue guards. Paper strong and though foxed, only mildly age-toned. In addition to Poe's "Eleonora," are numerous poems, stories, and articles by contemporary authors, most of them women.
