About This Item
London: James Cawthorn, British Library, 1811. Hardback. Good Only. 8.5" by 5". Not Stated. The fourth reprint of the fourth edition of Lord Byron's first major satire. The "fourth clandestine reprint" of the fourth edition, on unwatermarked paper in the original boards. With the half title page, and a page of publisher's advertisements to the rear. Lord Byron was prompted to write this work after Henry Brougham's review of his first book of poetry 'Hours of Idleness', which contained "strong censure" of Byron's work. Byron's response, in this work, so upset some of his critics that they challenged him to a duel; over time, in subsequent editions, it became a mark of prestige to be the target of Byron's pen. In the original boards. Front board is detached. Rear board is starting but is held firmly by both cords. Several small losses to the paper of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright but with the odd spot throughout. Good Only
