English Bards and Scotch Reviewers the first major satire by Lord Byron was prompted by the savage, anonymous criticism this received (now known to be the work of Henry Peter Brougham) in the Edinburgh Review prompted his first major satire. First published in 1809. This is a 'third spurious reprint of the fourth edition'. Watermark J X 1814 to page 3. With half title and publisher's advertisement to rear. The work so upset some of his critics they challenged Byron to a duel; over time, in subsequent editions, it became a mark of prestige to be the target of Byron's pen. Previous owner's ink inscription and bookplate to front pastedown. Condition: Ina paper covered publisher's binding. Externally, sound but with some wear to extremities including loss to paper, marks to boards. Internally, generally firmly bound. Bright and generally clean throughout. Overall: GOOD.

It was first published, anonymously, in March 1809; the opening parodies the first satire of Juvenal. A second, expanded edition followed later in 1809, with Byron identified as the author. The text is referred to in Tom Stoppard's play Arcadia. It is also referenced in John Edward Williams' novel Stoner in which it is mistaken by an incompetent graduate student as John Keats' work. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. A spurious reprint of the fourth edition. Watermark most visible to pages 2-3 'W Pickering and Co. 1816', title page states fourth edition was published in 1811. English Bards and Scotch Reviewers was first published anonymously in March 1809. It took a matter of months before Byron published an expanded edition with his name identified as the author. The opening of the poem parodies the first satire of Juvenal. Condition: In original grey boards. Externally, sound with slight rubbing, particularly to the extremities and front joint.
