About This Item

Very Good. 1983. Cards. 1 pages; Engraved Table Seating Card for Henry Kissinger's 60th Birthday Party at the Pierre in Original Envelope (5" x 3.5") Envelope bears the name "Mr. Rowland Evans" the card inside "You are seated at / Table 34" Evans has written a note at top of card "HAK 60th - 5/26/83 NYC Pierre" This card is from the famous party hosted by Harvard's Guido G. Goldman celebrating Dr. Kissinger's 60th birthday. Held in the Ballroom of the Pierre Hotel in New York City, it was an extravaganza, attended by former heads of state, Cabinet officers, big-name Europeans, the Georgetown elite, Harvard professors, politicians, tycoons and hot shots of one sort or another. A gala it was with a cake, singing, dancing, formal toasts and hugs for the brilliant if controversial former Secretary of State. President and Mrs. Gerald R. Ford were there, along with the former West German Chancellor, Helmut Schmidt, and the widows of the Shah of Iran, Egypt's President Anwar el-Sadat and Vice President Nelson A. Rockefeller. Nearly everybody who is anybody was there, from Brooke Astor to Adeshir Zahedi, the late Shah's Ambassador in Washington, and Jerome Zipkin, a close friend of President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan. Tammy Grimes found the party ''terribly exciting.'' Dr. Goldman toasted Dr. Kissinger and asked Mr. Ford; Mr. Schmidt; Mr. Shultz; Mrs. Johnson; Mrs. Sadat; Sahabzada Yaqub Khan, the foreign minister of Pakistan; Sir Christopher Soames, Winston Churchill's son-in-law; Winston Lord, president of the Council on Foreign Relations; Dean Henry Rosovsky of Harvard, and Lane Kirkland, the A.F.L.-C.I.O. chief, to speak. And they obliged, complimenting Dr. Kissinger on his wit, intellect and charm. PROVENANCE: Rowland Evans was a provocative newspaper columnist, commentator and author who antagonized liberal politicians and championed conservative causes. He left Yale and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 during World War II and was discharged in 1944 because of malaria. In 1963, Mr. Evans and Mr. Novak began writing ''Inside Report,'' an insider's view of politics that was published four times a week until Mr. Evans retired in 1993. Mr. Evans and Robert Novak began their work as columnists in the early 1960's, a time when newspaper columnists wielded outsize influence in national politics. The pair pioneered in transferring that influence to the medium of cable television with the political discussion program ''Evans & Novak'' -- carried on CNN from that cable network's beginning. Rowland Evans and his wife Kay (Katherine Winton Evans), also a respected writer and editor, were mainstays on the Washington social scene, hosting many memorable gatherings in their handsome Georgetown house -- to which flocked influential and remarkable people drawn from journalism, politics and general society over the decades from the 1960s to the 2000s. Both Evans and Novak became more predictably conservative over the years, particularly during the Reagan years. Reportedly, both columnists voted for JFK in 1960 and for Lyndon Johnson in 1964. Evans earned a place on Richard Nixon's infamous "Enemies List." Novak reported that Evans had JFK as a guest for the first dinner party the latter attended as President Elect. Kay and Rowland Evans has a particularly close friendship with Robert F. Kennedy, his wife Ethel and their family. .
