Fully illustrated with 50 full page, and 135 smaller engravings by Edmund H. New. Fine bright copy in a beautiful binding of half dark green morocco. Spine with five raised bands, compartments with double gilt ruled borders. Two sections lettered in gilt and the others decorated with gilt design of a bird on a branch. Marbled paper on boards. A lovely copy.

Full dark blue levant morocco bindings with fancy gilt turn ins, full bright gilt edges, decorative spine with gilt lozenge design, red leather labels in compartments between raised bands and bound by Holloway. Bookplate on endpaper. Minor brown blemishes to the colour plates and on the pages opposite. Wear to the joints on v.2, front joint is cracked down to the first compartment, otherwise are tender, covers are lightly rubbed with scattered dark blemishes and minor wear to the gilt edges, top corners on both volumes are slightly chipped and bumped. Otherwise both volumes are both firmly bound and in very good condition. 504 & 643 pp. .

LONDON : John van Voorst, 1856 A classic work on the natural history of the sea shore. It gives a detailed record of a summer holiday that Gosse spent in Tenby studying the shoreline and the wide variety of species that he found. it has 24 partly coloured plates of sea creatures - some microscopic. It is in the original green decorative cloth binding which has had a cloth case repair. It has a new green cloth spine to match with leather label and gilt titles. The contents are tight and in generally good condition with some brown spotting. A previous owner has written the magnification (x110) in ink at the bottom of one of the plates.

First edition of this title in the Woodcraft series by one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America, based on his Sons of Daniel Boone organization (founded 1905), and Seton’s Woodcraft Indians. This work includes sections on constructing your own bow, chipping flint arrow heads, forest fires, poisonous plants, venomous snakes, hiking, cheap camp kitchens, making rope, baskets, bark buckets, and more. When the Boy Scouts of America was formed in 1910, Beard would serve as one of the National Scout Commissioners until his death in 1941.
