A fascinating essay on Cruikshank's talent, illustrated with plates and vignettes throughout from his works.Written by English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray. Most renowned for 'Vanity Fair' which satirises life in early 19th century Britain, Thackeray was primarily known for his satires and parodies, criticising high society and the fickle aspirations of its members, such as profitability, marriage and power.Containing the armorial bookplate of Arthur William Bennett.The first edition of this work. In a half calf binding. Externally a trifle worn; some noticeable rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities. Spine is faded as to be expected, and extremities are bumped. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound, with a slight strain to the front hinge, which remains firm. Pages are occasionally a little spotted, particularly plates. Good
