About This Item

London: Printed for Cadell and Davies, 1813.. FIRST EDITION. Small 8vo. (18.5 x 12 cm). pp. x+139. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands and decorated in gilt, sides rule with gilt filet, marbled endpapers, sprinkled edges. Unobtrusive stamp reading "Pearse, Warrington" to bottom of f.f.e.p. Spine a bit rubbed and lacking label, binding a bit soiled with minor loss of leather to lower board, contents clean and crisp, generally a very good copy. The author, John Ferriar (1761-1815), was a Scottish physician and author whose researches into typhoid and other diseases and leadership of the Manchester Infirmary earned him renown. His last work, An Essay towards a Theory of Apparitions, on mental hallucinations, is a sometimes humorous examination of ghosts, the manifestations of witchcraft, etc. in which he argues that there is a psycho-physiological rather than a supernatural basis to such phenomena.
