[4]+xlii+373+[4] pages with folding map, 10 plates, appendix and index. Royal Octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") bound in original publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering and stamping to spine in original jacket. Edited by Ralph Piddington. First edition.

Dr Williamson left, on his death, a collection of manuscripts dealing with a variety of Polynesian problems. Most of these manuscripts have been published previously. The remainder of of his unpublished manuscripts have been brought together and edited by Ralph Piddington, who has also reviewed material published since Williamson's death The first part of the book deals with particular topics: Warfare, the Drinking of Kava, the Society known as the Arioi, and customs relating to Sex, Courtship and Infanticide. The second part deals with problems of historical reconstruction in Polynesian Culture, theories of Origin, the Relation between Polynesia and Melanesia and an appendix on Assam parallels, with an analysis of recent studies in Polynesian History by the editor.

Condition:

Previous owner's name and date on front end paper and paste down, light edge wear. Jacket price clipped, corners and spine ends chipped, light foxing, closed tear at spine running 4 inches up. A very good copy in about very good jacket.
