New York: Fairchild Publications, 1952. Hardcover. Very Good +/good. [4], 166 p.: in-text and full-page illustrations; 19 cm. Black cloth, with pale yellow spine and cover titles. Illustrated endpapers. Dust jacket with illustration running continuously from back to front section, in mylar cover; not price-clipped. Illustrations and jacket design by Arabelle Wheatley. Max Hess, Jr., (1911-1968) took over Hess Brothers department store in Allentown, Pa., after the deaths of his father, Max Hess, Sr., and his uncle Charles Hess. He presents in this memoir his experiences and advice on revolutionizing the department store. The illustrator, Arabelle Wheatley (Katherine Arabelle Wheatley Buckbee (1921-2015)), was born in Washington County, Pa., and worked as a commercial artist and illustrator of the children's magazine "Ranger Rick." Later she focused as an author and illustrator on stories and drawings involving nature. Extremely scarce, particularly with dust jacket. Book is in Very Good+ Condition: cover is lightly soiled; slight chip in upper edge of a few pages; otherwise, clean and tight. Dust Jacket is in Good Condition: loss along upper and lower edges; minor loss from spine title; closed tear into back flap; rubbed along front joint; colors remain bright.
