New York: Hurst and Company Decorated cloth; gilt spine lettering. No date; circa 1889. With few illustrations despite title page indication of "numerous illustrations." READING COPY. Text pages age-browned and somewhat fragile, but main text block is intact. Upper corners of title page and both pages of Preface are missing; irregular worn/torn away section; portion of title and small section of Preface are missing. Additional loss probably due to rodent damage to narrow 2" of top edge of front endpaper and a few pages of Contents. Page 345/346 torn diagonally but old repair is holding well. Cover cloth stained and discolored, with apparent rodent nibbling to 1" upper rear board. Binding intact.
