An important work in which many of the common terms and concepts still in use in tectonics, such as Gondwanaland (a supercontinent) and Tethys (a former equatorial ocean) , were first proposed. It had an enormous influence on the development of geosciences and is easily the greatest single work on the evolution of the earth's surface features.
