First edition of this collection of European fairy tales, which includes the first appearance in book form of Edward Burne-Jones's illustrations. The book was put together by the Oxford educator Archibald MacLaren, at whose gymnasium in North Oxford Burne-Jones and William Morris used, as students, to practice swordplay and boxing. Octavo. Original purple cloth, titles gilt to spine, spine and sides decorated in gilt and blind, light brown coated endpapers. Illustrated frontispiece and extra illustrated title, and an illustrated vignette tailpiece, all by Edward Burne-Jones though unsigned. Four pages of publisher's advertisements at the rear. Cloth generally somewhat worn and mottled, though sound and internally clean, better than usually encountered and overall a good copy.
