This stunning and rare Fairy Tales and Legends by Hans Andersen first edition has 10 full page black and white illustrations and numerous smaller illustrations by Rex Whistler. This first edition was published by Cobden Sanderson Ltd in London and measures 6 x 8¼ inches (approximately). This stunning Rex Whistler first edition book has 48 Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales that includes The Little Match Girl, The Little Mermaid, The Nightingale, The Red Shoes, The Snow Queen, The Tinder-Box, The Ugly Duckling, The Wild Swans, Thumbelina, and many more classic children’s stories. The original binding is red with cream coloured decoration, and gilt decoration with gilt lettering. The binding is in exceptional Very Good condition with slight fading to the spine, light knocks to the top and bottom of the spine, and slight shelf lean. There are 470 numbered pages, all edges rose-coloured tinted, wonderful decorated endpapers, that are in Near Fine condition with only very occasional spotting, and a neat inscription to the front pastedown.. Fairy Tales and Legends by Hans Andersen Illustrated by Rex Whistler is a very rare and collectable first edition book packed with wonderful short stories and great illustrations.

Description:
Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
