About This Item

UK,slim 8vo HB+dw/dj,author SIGNED,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj,but author's neat, blue ink,hand-written ink, calligraphic-style signature - without dedication under his printed name on title page.Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated, colour scenic photographic front panel of dw/dj and black lettering, with black text critics' reviews on a blue background, rear panel; with minimal shelf-wear and negligible creasing to dw/dj edges - no nicks or tears present, but miniscule bumping/creasing to head+foot of spine/backstrip.Small,fluid stain internally to dw/dj, at foot of spine/ backstrip of same and some minor, faint, superficial scoring to rear panel - but without affecting the board beneath.Top+ fore-edges also lightly aged but clean and unmarked, contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread, apart from my own collation. Unblemished, plain black paper-covered boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/backstrip and b/w photographic endpapers.UK,slim 8vo HB+dw/dj,SIGNED,1st edn,9-47pp includes half-title+title pages,(for all you completists out there - a short extract from Douglas Adams 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy', about dolphins!!) as an intro/foreword. Heathcote Williams's 'Whale Nation' has stirred the conscience of people all over the world. His research for that poem led him to a remote cove in the south-west of Ireland where a hermit dolphin was rumoured to live.Williams decided to venture to a meeting in the vast wilderness of its watery element. The extraordinary encounter between man and dolphin is alluringly described in this sublime and dramatic poem.Submerged, alone in the alien sea,he was aware that the dolphin could torpedo its half-ton weight into him at thirty knots, snapping his spine as if it were a sardine's,or could crush each limb into fragments with its eighty-eight teeth.Yet inches away, eye to eye,it appeared to entertain no such wish and only invited play with its three-foot smile - a tender lipped antidote to panic.Drawn into the dolphin's force field, Williams had the sense of some old alliance rekindled,of two minds blending,of an ancient, hidden nature, overlapping somewhere along the line with man's. The experience changed him,in the way one is changed by falling in love, and he composed this poignant evocation of it while on that wild Irish coast.
