Written in the original French, with two volumes bound in one.This novel follows orphan Remi Barberin as he is sold to a street musician and journeys to Paris, Toulouse, and Fontainebleau, detailing his relationships with the people he meets on his journey. The novel was reportedly inspired by the Italian street musicians of the nineteenth century, in particular the harpists from Viggiano, Basilicata.With numerous vignette illustrations from Loewitz.The work of Hector Malot, a French author who started his career in law before turning to literature. He wrote over seventy novels in his life, though this work, first published in 1878, was his most popular.Undated; dated c.1896 via Jisc.With the contemporary owner's inscription of Evelyn Constance Harris to a front endpaper, dated 1899. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Rubbing to board extremities and front joint. Fading to back strip. Contemporary owner's inscription to front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean, though lightly age toned due to paper type. Very Good
